One honest warning on replacements: nobody knows exactly what's under an old driveway or patio until it's broken out. If the soil is wet clay or loose fill, the base work grows, so holding about 10 percent in reserve is smart. A good estimate tells you up front where that risk is.

Most of it is decided before the pour: a compacted base, joints cut at the right spacing, and a pitch that drains. After that, seal it before its first winter and keep deicing salt off it that first season.
